3 Ways to Know the Will of God
(This article originally appeared in The Brethren Evangelist in 1940).
1. The Christian who would know the will of God must have a receptive mind, and one that is responsive to divine influence. The mind that is closed, and set against any change of its standards and ideals, or that is unwilling to receive new light and leading, will never know the will of God. He is like those whom Jesus told about, who had eyes to see and saw not and who have ears to hear and heard not. But he who wants to know the will of God, and has a heart that is hungering and thirsting after righteous, shall be filled with the knowledge of the Lord.
2. The Christian who wishes to know the will of God should put himself in the way of divine influence. He should go to church and Sunday school, to prayer sessions and Bible instruction classes, and mingle with people who have their minds and hearts set upon the doing of the will of God. He who absents himself from the house of Cod and fails to associate much with spiritually minded people is not likely to grow in the knowledge of God and of his will, then is a man to increase in physical health and vigor without a proper amount of fresh air and sunshine. One's spiritual environment counts for much.
3. The Christian must actually act purposefully seek to know the will of God, and this he can do by participating in Bible study, and by seeking the consultation of wise and experienced Christian leaders. It is well to have an open, responsive mind, and a Christian environment, but mere absorption is not enough to enable one to get filled with the knowledge of God. There must he intentional seeking after the will of God. The mind must be filled with the Word and the heart must be poured out to God in prayer. He who seeks God will be found of Him, and his Spirit will guide the seeking soul into all truth.
