Brethren Retreat at Shipshewana Lake Celebrates 100
Shipshewana Celebrates 100 (101, actually) years of ministry
Over the Labor Day holiday in early September, The Brethren Retreat at Shipshewana Lake (Camp Shipshewana) celebrated its 100th anniversary! The celebration was postponed due to COVID-19 from 2020. Over 200 celebrants flooded the Retreat Haus and Laymen's lodge to celebrate the incredible ministry at Shipshewana over the last century.
The event featured a BBQ pulled pork dinner, concert music from The Foleys, carnival games, guest speakers, and more. Rich Bontrager (formerly of the Winding Waters Brethren Church) was a featured speaker.
Executive Director Rick Miller shared inspirational stories of lives changed through the camp ministry and updated attendees on the 2020 Vision to Revitalize. Part of this vision included the purchase of camp property adjacent to the Brethren Retreat, as well as an overhaul to the Retreat Haus.
Generous donations have recently bolstered efforts to fulfill the overhaul of the Retreat Haus. Ardmore First Brethren Church presented the Brethren Retreat with a significant gift of $100,000 to kick off the renovation project. Ardmore, who recently sold their parsonage, used a portion of the proceeds to further camp ministries. The church hopes other Midwest Region churches and individuals will collectively match the $100,000 gift.
Brethren Church National Staff member Ron Waters was able to join the festivities at the camp and gathered some photos and videos of the celebration to share.
