The Impact of a Good Book
We understand and value the fact that there is no greater or more life-changing book than God's Word. It is our source of spiritual food, our instruction and guidebook for life, and one of the main sources of hearing from our Father. Without it, where and what would we be today?
The view from my desk, is a shelf full of some of the latest ministry books available. Almost every time someone walks through the office, they stop at this area and look. Some will even borrow a book or two from the shelves or visit Gary’s office.
In Gary's office the books are overflowing on his book shelves.
Books are important. I remember when my kids were in elementary school, each night we had to complete a reading log. Fifteen to twenty minutes of reading each night completed with a parent's signature was part of our kid’s grade. Not only does reading improve a child’s comprehension, it can instill in them a love for learning. The hope is that all kids will continue to read as they grow.
As adults we tend to give up reading with the excuse of, “I don’t have time”, “I don’t enjoy reading” or “ I read too much in college”. Not everyone enjoys sitting down with a book (or an electronic reader). Some people utilize audio books. The idea is the same; continual learning is important. This is one reason many professions require continuing education courses throughout a career. As pastors and leaders, this should be an area where we can help each other grow; to share with a fellow leader what we’re learning from the book we’re reading. Proverbs 27:17 As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another. There is a need to discuss with each other what we are learning and to create a place to dialog about what challenges us through those materials.
