LANARK – Giving time can lead to big accomplishments – and big recognition.
First Brethren Church’s Workcation volunteer work week last year has earned Lanark one of 14 places in this year’s Governor’s Hometown Awards. The city will receive a plaque and road sign today at a ceremony at the Old State Capitol in Springfield.
Floyd Roberts with First Brethren, who helped organize the program, spoke at the Oct. 17 Lanark City Council meeting. about the work that went into helping those in need around the community, both in the first year and this year’s work week. Both Workcations were in June of their respective years.
“We sent groups of six to 12 people up to Alaska to do projects. Things started tightening up 3 years ago, and spending $1,500 to send someone 1,500 miles wasn’t really necessary. We decided to do a vacation workshop locally, because we didn’t have to go 1,500 miles to find someone to help,” Roberts said.
Ladies at First Brethren would make breakfast for the volunteers, who provided their own lunch. The need for volunteer was tangible, with 925 volunteer hours given during the 6-day period in 2016, and 1,099 hours, 45 minutes this year.
“The interesting part was, we didn’t know was how many students we’d get. 32 percent of participants were students this past June,” Roberts said.
Roberts said he hopes the program will be ongoing.
